Around a dozen national rowing and canoeing teams from several European countries have passed the Rowing High-Performance Center (CARR) since its inauguration in 2016, said the managing body of the equipment.

To this number, more than a thousand of practitioners of other amateur and professional sports modalities, ranging from futsal to cycling that meet in a space inaugurated on July 6, 2016.

"The year 2018 will be an affirmation for a sports equipment, considered of extreme importance for the development of the economy of the territory of Douro and for its promotion across borders," said to Lusa the mayor of Vila Nova de Foz Côa, Gustavo Duarte, managing entity of CARR.

For the months of January and February the presence of national rowing and canoeing teams from the Netherlands and Norway is confirmed. A rowing team from Oxford (England) is also confirmed for the month of April.

In addition to these and other national teams of the modality, they have already passed through Pocinho CARR, selections such as Russia, Estonia and Switzerland or the Portuguese overseas duo Pedro Fraga / Nuno Mendes among others.

"We want to give Pocinho CARR a comprehensive occupation as the organization of several events not only sport, but cultural or recreational," stressed the mayor.

According to the mayor, the Secretary of State for Sport is channeling several sporting events for the CARR of Pocinho.

"It is an equipment, both functional and architectural, that has snatched international awards and has been distinguished as one of the best of its kind worldwide, both athletes and their coaches," he emphasized.

The promotion of the equipment is being carried out worldwide by teams of the specialty "in order to give visibility to the sports equipment".

Other modalities that will be based on the CARR of Pocinho is the "trail" (an activity that combines physical exercise with the contemplation of nature), being scheduled two events, one for March another for October and that gathered hundreds of practitioners .

The CARR of Pocinho represented an investment of eight million euros.

The construction of the sports equipment had financial contributions from the POVT - Operational Program for Territorial Enhancement of the National Strategic Reference Framework (QREN) and the Portuguese Sport Institute (IDP).

For the mayor of Gustavo Duarte, Gustavo Duarte, the mayor of the district of Guarda, CARR is one of the most important investments of the last years in the municipality, only surpassed by the Côa Museum.

The sports complex includes an indoor swimming pool, a gym and an entertainment area. It can house about two hundred athletes.

For the dynamization of the rowing center, protocols were signed with the Portuguese Canoeing Federation, the Portuguese Rowing Federation, the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro and the Health Center of Vila Nova de Foz Côa.
