The High-Performance Center (CARR) of Pocinho, in the municipality of Vila Nova de Foz Côa, won the 2016 National Real Estate Prize in the category of Collective Equipment", the chamber said on Friday.

In a statement, the municipality said that the prize was awarded to that equipment selected from a total of 17 projects finalists to the 2016 National Real Estate Prize, which distinguishes reference buildings in Housing, Tourism, Offices and Collective Equipment.

Among the nominees for the collective equipment category were the Doorm's Student Residence, the National Coach Museum, the Leixões Port Cruise Terminal and the Poco Grande Oars and Canoeing Center.

The CARR of Pocinho is a sports equipment of the municipality of Vila Nova de Foz Côa and the author of the architect Álvaro Fernandes Andrade, was designed for the athletes of high competition.

The sports equipment is located in Pocinho, municipality of Vila Nova de Foz Côa, district of Guarda. The CARR is part of a territory classified doubly as a World Heritage Site by Unesco, the Rock Engravings and the Douro Valley.

"Taking into account this important feature, the entire building was designed with great sensitivity and architectural options that, on the one hand, minimized its impact on the landscape and, on the other hand, allowed meeting the new challenges of accessibility and mobility for all and of sustainability, "said the developers of the equipment.

Athletes and coaches of Olympic teams have already considered that the Center of High Performance is among the best in the world for the preparation and training of the practitioners of this sport.

Already in operation, this project assumes as a reference in the high competition of Rowing and Adapted Rowing, both nationally and internationally, being able to house up to 180 athletes in "top facilities" for the practice, enjoying an extraordinary view and framing unique landscape.

"CARR will not only be an attraction for international sportsmen, but also a landmark in a privileged country on the international architecture tourism route," said the project's promoters.
